How to be good parents? Being a good dad or a good mom is important, it is even essential for the well-being of his or her children.
Depending on the age and gender of your child you will certainly have to overcome some challenges and hardships but anything is possible in life!
I am the lucky dad of 2 boys whom I love above all else! So here are my tips and advice for being a good parent. Good reading!
Tips for being a good parent:
1. Listening to your child
Regardless of your child’s age, you need to know how to decode the child’s signs, gestures and words to better understand and interact afterwards.
Children often need to confide, but also to tell their experiences, their dreams, their desires, their fears, their days, etc.
The dad and or the mom is the best person, the best ear that a child can have to confide. So remember, communication and listening are key to the success of this relationship with your child.
2. Being a good parent also means being patient and accommodating
It’s not always easy to be a father or a mother, especially with daily life going so fast.
Children drain a lot of our energy and can be terribly demanding in a day. We must therefore know how to be patient and tolerant with our little ones.
When you can’t take it anymore, go breathe on the balcony, isolate yourself for a few minutes in the bedroom and if you can count on someone’s support. Also take advantage of
- Take a hot bath or shower.
- Take a walk or go for a run.
- Have a coffee with a friend.
- Listening to music with headphones, etc.
Young child or teenager, being patient is important as a parent!
Each of the child’s age groups brings its own set of challenges. Whether it’s a 4-year-old child or a 15-year-old teenager, we have to be patient with our loves.
Be gentle, calm and reconcile at all times with your children, that’s what being good parents is all about!
3. Spending quality time with your kids
Being good parents also means having a good time with your children and doing things and activities as a family. Family first as they say!
Being available for his or her children is a “very” important quality of a good parent.
It is certain that after a long day of work motivation can be somewhat lacking but believe me it is important for your children and for you to play games and activities together.
Have fun and splurge with the family!
So even if it is not always tempting at first sight, it is important to take time during the day to simply play and have fun with the children. Laugh, have fun, go crazy and leave all the room for your children.
4. Teach good values to your child
Think about what is important to you. Ask yourself what values you would like to pass on to your children and share these values with them.
What values are important to you?
- the respect
- honesty
- forgiveness
- the sharing
- generosity
- autonomy
In fact, it doesn’t matter, the important thing is to share and make your children human, real and aware. That’s also being a good father and/or a good mother!
Make your child aware:
It is important to make children aware of being generous in life. Make them aware of preserving the environment, caring for animals, thinking about people in need, elderly people and sick people.
5. Being consistent and being able to say no is important
Another important quality of a good parent is to be able to say no to your child and above all to be consistent.
Being consistent as a parent:
One of the duties of the parent is to educate and discipline the children. It is completely normal to sometimes have to punish children for their not so good deeds.
When you punish a child, even if it is difficult to hold on, it is important to maintain consistency in the rules versus the punishments. The child will know what to expect and will know that he will not have the last word.
If you impose a consequence, you must go through with it and not give in out of sadness, guilt, or just to buy peace. Consistency is essential between words and actions.
Being able to say no:
When you love your children, you sometimes want to always please them. We find it difficult to say no and we would like to accept everything to make them happy ¸and be a good parent for them.
But this behavior does them no favors at all! In life, you can’t always have it all. It is important that children learn to live with this reality from an early age.
Don’t say yes to their every whim. Saying no to them is also thinking about them and doing them a favor for the future, that’s the quality of a good parent.
6. Always encourage your child
Encouraging your child, regardless of age, is extremely important for the child’s well-being.
Children are not so different from adults in that everyone needs encouragement and positivity to succeed in life.
Be proud of your child:
Children need to be encouraged, supported and valued. Encourage them in all spheres and all stages of their lives. Show them that you are proud of them and encourage them to always persevere.
Use positive reinforcement:
Always encourage your children, regardless of their successes or failures. Be proud of them and show it.
Show them that it’s okay to fall and make mistakes once in a while, but the important thing is to get up and be stronger afterwards.
7. Love your child unconditionally
The love of a father and or a mother is unconditional. You know that very well, but your children should know it too.
Love them no matter what…
They need to feel that they aren’t perfect, but that you love them nonetheless. That in life they will sometimes have failures and they will make mistakes, but that you will always love them no matter what.
