How to remove white stains from wood?
Do you have the bad habit of putting a glass of water, a coffee cup or even a hot plate on the coffee table or even on the side table or the console table?
Removing a white stain from wooden furniture is not always easy! Fortunately for you, 10-trucs.com offers you today easy tips and tricks to quickly remove white stains from wood.
Tips and products to remove a white stain from wood:
1. Remove a white stain from wood with an abrasive sponge
You’ve just taken the hot coffee cup off the wooden coffee table and oops, a nasty white stain has appeared! Above all, don’t panic, it is possible to clean this white spot with an abrasive sponge and a little soapy water.
Simply gently rub the white stain with the sponge, taking care to rub in the direction of the wood scratches. Add a little soapy water or just liquid soap to the stain to thoroughly clean the wood.

2. Make a white spot disappear with a cork
Here is another somewhat original trick which nevertheless makes it possible to effectively remove white spots on varnished wooden furniture. The cork stopper is really effective in removing a white stain on varnished wood caused by the heat of a coffee cup or a hot plate, for example.
You can also use this cork trick to make ink disappear from wood!
- Use a real cork and cut it in half.
- Rub the white spot with the cork stopper.
- Always rub in the direction of the wood scratches.
Be careful not to rub too vigorously because you risk heating the varnish on the wood and thus making it very shiny.
If after cleaning you notice a lot of shine on the wood at the level of the old stain, you can use the abrasive sponge to rub and thus remove this shine.
This cork trick can also be useful on waxed parquet. Come read my other article about it right here: How to remove stains from waxed parquet?
3. Rubbing alcohol to remove white spots
Another remedy to quickly remove a white stain due to heat or water is rubbing alcohol or 70% alcohol if you prefer. Just use a soft cloth or even a small wipe soaked in rubbing alcohol and rub the white spot.
The downside with this 70 alcohol tip (but also for the other tips and tricks) is that it may also remove wax and/or varnish from the wood surface. You will therefore have to apply a thin layer of varnish or wax to complete the cleaning.
This is why it is best to use this trick on natural wood only to avoid removing the wax layer.
4. Baking soda against white spots
It’s no longer a secret, baking soda is a natural product that you absolutely must have in large quantities at home! Why, because this natural product cleans everything…. Or almost everything at least!
Here’s how to clean that white stain with baking soda:
- Add a teaspoon of cold water to 2 teaspoons of baking soda.
- Mix well to form a sort of paste.
- Take the paste and rub the white spot with circular motions.
That’s it, after a few minutes of rubbing the white stain should be completely gone from the wooden furniture. What, you don’t have baking soda at home? Here it is at the best price:
